Public Notes:

Probably the first Dutch picture of a telescope. An gentleman standing outside a city, holding a refracting telescope to his eye. Not making astronomical observations.

"Illustration of the telescope, accompanying a poem by Johan de Brune,
being a warning against jealousy and envy, stating: Deez nieuwe vond en
konst, die, door een kleyn vizierken, doet schijnen overgroot, dat maer en is een
zierken, verbeelt den rechten aerd van ongunst, haet en nijd. In English: 'This new invention and art, which through a small visor makes appear enlarged what is only a mite, symbolises the true nature of unkindness, hatred and envy'." (Louwman, and Zuidervaart 2013, 23).
