Public Notes:

Early case binocular telescope after the design of Cherubin d'Orleans. By Father Apian, Capuchin monk. Dimension of main box containing ocular lenses are 97 mm x 202 mm, length 880 mm. Main box bears coat of arms of Baron von Burlow-- a grapevine with fourteen grapes surrounded by laurel wreath. Indicates it likely belonged to the collection of Hanover Privy Councillor and Grand Reeve Joachim Heinrich Freiherr von Burlow (1650–1724). Was likely bequeathed to the University of Gottingen, and from there turned over to the Jena collection in 1926. (Remaining Apian binocular in Gottingen collection very similar to this one and probably from same source.)
