"This non-achromatic telescope has five draw tubes. The barrel is covered with sharkskin and is intricately decorated with silver pins. The draw tubes are made of hand-coloured vellum with fittings made of horn and silver and the eyepiece lens is set in a horn mount. The objective lens and possibly a lens cap are missing. The name 'JOHN MA' is stamped on several tubes, suggesting that it was made by John Marshall, one of the leading opticians in London. He was a contemporary of Robert Hooke and worked in Ludgate Street" (Royal Museums Greenwich).
