"This non-achromatic telescope has an octagonal mahogany barrel and a single brass draw tube. The other brass fittings include sliding eyepiece and objective lens covers. The telescope once belonged to Rear-Admiral Charles Steevens (1705-61), and is of a type commonly used on board ship in the 18th century" (Royal Museums Greenwich).
