"This is a portable reflector telescope by James Short. The telescope has an adjustable inclination and rotary movement. The brass barrel contains primary and secondary specula (mirrors) and there is a screw thread for focusing the secondary mirror by use of the rod attached to the barrel. On top of the barrel are attachments for sighting, including an eyepiece shade and an object end cap. The height of the object to the top of the barrel, including the box, is 250mm. The length of the barrel, with the eyepiece and cap, is 310mm with a diameter of 175mm. The telescope has a detachable brass stand, which screws into the sliding lid of the mahogany box. All the pieces fit into the 340mm long box when the telescope is dismantled. The box, however, lacks a key" (Royal Museums Greenwich).
