"This is a small Galilean telescope made of turned wood. The eyepiece cap unscrews to reveal a small sundial. The gnomon (the indicator that casts the shadow) is set for 48 degrees north, the latitude of Paris. The telescope can also be unscrewed, allowing the objective end to be used as a simple microscope. Multi-purpose instruments like this were often made around the turn of the 18th century" (Royal Museums Greenwich).
