"Luxurious telescope with silver fittings and three green coloured drawtubes with blind tooling. Main tube covered with green coloured ray skin. Length 25-60 cm, Ø 4 cm. Signed: ‘T . Ribright / London’. Among the edge of one of the silver ferrules the following text is engraved: ‘The gift of Sam Lutwidge to G.T ., 1754 Superest Memoria’. Middle of the eighteenth century.

The instrument maker Thomas Ribright was active as a jeweller and optician between 1735 and 1772. He is renowned for his highly fashionable products. The former donor of this telescope, Samuel Lutwidge, was a member of a family of prominent merchants (also written as ‘Ludwidge’) in Whitehaven, an English city in Cumbria" (Louwman and Zuidervaart, 2013).
