"The main tube and ferrules are covered with red brown leather, richly decorated with [worn-out] gold tooling. Four drawtubes are covered with marbled paper. Ivory end pieces. Length 34-76 cm, Ø 4.3 cm. Signed on the [broken] objective lens (Ø 2.8 cm, diaphragm Ø 1.8 cm): ‘Carlo Antonio Buttieri Roma An. 1726’.

Carlo Antonio Buttieri worked in Rome around 1700. He is not mentioned by Lualdi (2000) in his overview of Italian instrument makers. However Vecchio (1995) has described a Buttieri-telescope with comparable ivory fittings, dated 1737" (Louwman and Zuidervaart, 2013).
