Public Notes:

"(Presumably) German telescope with tubes made of pasteboard. Main tube covered with black leather. Seven drawtubes, covered with thick parchment. No tooling has been used. All optical components are missing. The wooden objective fitting has a black iron attachment, probably a sun hood. The ferrules are covered with leather and lead or dark iron. Their diameter is diminishing towards the eyepiece. Length 95-280 cm, Ø 8.5 cm. Unsigned. Presumably mid-seventeenth century .

The small decline in diameter of the ferrules on this telescope is an indication for a relatively early date. In the seventeenth century this was done in order to stabilize a telescope in a wooden funnel on a stand. This was done by for instance instrument makers such as Johannes Wiesel from Augsburg. Later other solutions were invented" (Louwman and Zuidervaart, 2013).
